For this year Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile for the Comic Relief, the Middlesbrough Sport & Leisure made arrangement for one to be organized at our door step. This was an ideal opportunity for both adults and children to participate in a wide range of sporting and physical activities at the Albert Park. The event was organized in connection with MELA, which is very popular now in Middlesbrough.
When we came across the leaflets, we thought well, we have been approached on m many occasions by some members of the African community wanting to do sport activities so we thought why not start from here? We contacted a few people who were happy with the idea. We formed a team of 12 people and got some financial help from the Mary Thomson Fund to pay for the entry fees which was £5. We advertised on the sport relief website but it was too late, so we didn't get any sponsorship. However our entry fee did contribute to global poverty.
Our team was called the Middlesbrough Diversity Marathon (MDM). We all enjoyed the running and now looking for further funding to engage local people in sport activities, which we believe are good to keep fit and healthy.
Thank you for the generosity of ACANE and ZENITH food store who provided some refreshments to the runners at the end.
